Frequently asked questions

Does the river we choose have to end at the sea?

The short answer to this is no.  We hope that anyone can take part in their own challenge so if you want to do a shorter river that is fine.  For your challenge to be recognised as complete under the Source to Sea Challenge rules the full distance must be designated a river in it's own right.

Does my river have to be in any particular country?

No.  We hope to see people challenging themselves from all over the world.

Can we make up our own rules for our challenge?

Certainly, however in order to have your challenge recognised we ask everyone to adhere to the basic rules set out on this site.  Click on the Challenge Rules Quik Link for further information.

Do we have to raise money for charity?

The short answer is no.  Our original idea was to use the journeys as personal and group challenges.  However, s2s challenges can be used to raise much needed funds for your favourite charities and groups.  This can be a registered charity or your local youth or neighbourhood group.  We have provided a link for charities and similar groups and organisations that can also be used to help anyone find a charity that they can raise money for.

I am a representative of a charitable organisation, can I register my charity on your site?

Yes.  We have a section our site for registered charities and similar groups and organisations who have sent us their details.  This facility is FREE.  Challengers can then search for charities operating in their own areas or countries, or search for national charities.  Please visit our Charities section for further details.

How did you choose the name?

A few years ago a few of us decided to work out a challenge that we could do; something that wasn't done.  We decided on the name "The Bann Challenge" initially as our initial thought was to follow the course of the River Bann in Northern Ireland from it's source in the Mourne Mountains to the sea at the Barmouth north from Coleraine and we hoped that by doing this we could hopefully attract others into doing similar challenges. We then chose the name Source to Sea for all of the challenges as that is what everyone will be doing.
